"I’d made a small handful of these red oak wooden panels to paint on. This is one that I staggered the top into a stair step shape. It’s all done with sennelier oil pastels. The piece is an intuitive one. I might have felt the immediate urge for dancers, but the subject matter and composition emerged in a rather quick and fluid way. I went with it, and picked colors that were felt. But this one was polished over many sessions and building up layers. Sometimes I ruined a section; usually they could be recovered. 

I think the flowers and grasses give the clear indication it’s outside; the big evergreen pine too. However, the dramatic shift of brilliant light to the dark red makes me wonder a bit. The snippet of an audience seems to be enjoying themselves. A chicken is thrown into the air. It’s too large to be a dove. A faint rooster above that, at the very top, is seen whirring about. It’s a nice imagined world to me."
